When must I report a motor accident?

You are required to report any motor accident to the designated reporting centers within 24 hours or by the next working day, regardless of whether you plan to claim under your own insurance policy. This includes reporting even if there are no damages or injuries. Failing to report the accident on time may lead to a reduction in your No Claim Discount (NCD) when renewing your motor policy.

What is a private settlement?

A private settlement occurs when both parties involved in a motor accident agree to resolve the issue without involving legal authorities. Common mistakes

  1. Failing to Report the Accident in Time: Many individuals overlook the requirement to report the accident within 24 hours or by the next working day. This delay can lead to a reduction in the No Claim Discount (NCD) during the next policy renewal.

  3. Not Specifying the Vehicle Information: Both parties must include the registration numbers and personal details of the drivers and owners involved. Omitting this information can hinder the settlement process.

  4. Ignoring the Agreement Terms: The form requires a clear agreement on liability. Failing to select or correctly delete the appropriate option (a or b) can lead to misunderstandings later on.

Misconceptions

  • Misconception 1: You don't need to report the accident if you settle privately.
  • Many people believe that if they agree to a private settlement, there is no need to report the accident to their insurance company. This is incorrect. Regardless of whether you plan to claim under your own policy or settle privately, you must report the accident within 24 hours or by the next working day. Failing to do so may lead to a reduction in your No Claim Discount (NCD) during the next renewal of your motor policy.

  • Misconception 2: A private settlement means you won't have any legal obligations.
  • Some individuals think that entering into a private settlement absolves them of all legal responsibilities. However, a private settlement is a legally binding agreement. Both parties must adhere to the terms they agree upon. If one party fails to fulfill their obligations, the other party may still have legal recourse.

  • Misconception 3: Your NCD is not protected if you settle privately.
  • There is a common belief that settling privately will jeopardize your No Claim Discount. In fact, if you are an NTUC Income policyholder and you settle privately, your NCD will be protected even if the other party decides to lodge a claim later. This means you can settle amicably without worrying about losing your discount.

  • Misconception 4: You can make a police report after a private settlement.
  • Some people think that they can file a police report after agreeing to a private settlement. This is not the case. Both parties must agree not to make a police report as part of the private settlement process. Once you have settled privately, you cannot later decide to involve the police regarding the same accident.
